Voice is the signal carrier for speech.

Fluency

Fluency is the ability to speak smoothly with a natural flow, without undue hesitation, repetition, or struggle.

Typical issues:

  • Repeating sounds, syllables, or words (e.g., "c-c-c-cat").

  • Prolonging sounds (e.g., "sssssssnake").

  • Involuntary pauses or blocks where no sound comes out.

  • Visible tension or struggle when trying to speak.

  • Speaking too fast with a lack of clear articulation.

  • Omitting sounds or syllables, making speech hard to understand.

Swallowing

Swallowing is the ability to effectively and safely transfer food from the mouth through the throat and oesophagus into the stomach.

  • Aspiration pneumonia
